GWAS are genomewide association studies. These studies typically examined evidence for association between a trait of interest and 100,000 - 1,000,000 genetic variants distributed across the genome. They have been quite successful at identifying complex trait susceptibility loci, with hundreds of new complex trait susceptibility loci identified in the last few years.
