Objective

This lecture examines maximum likelihood based estimation of allele frequencies in several simple settings, such as estimation of allele frequencies from samples of unrelated individuals and from samples of mother-child pairs. The objective is to both provide an intuition to some of the issues involved in allele frequency estimation but also to review the basic principles of maximum likelihood estimation.
