GWAS are genomewide association studies. These studies typically examined evidence for association between a trait of interest and 100,000 - 1,000,000 genetic variants distributed across the genome. They have been quite successful at identifying complex trait susceptibility loci, with [www.genome.gov/gwastudies hundreds] of new complex trait susceptibility loci identified in the last few years.
